Course Description

Occupational First Aid Course (OFAC)

By the end of the course, learners will have the relevant knowledge and application skills in First Aid and CPR+AED to apply during an emergency or accident at their workplace.

1. Explain the duties and responsibilities of First Aider

2. List the legal requirements under the Workplace Safety & Health Act and Workplace Safety and Health (First Aid) Regulations (Cap. 354A, Rg 4) for a workplace

3. Check and pack contents of First Aid Box

4. Apply first aid to accident victims in the workplace

5. Manage victims of hazardous chemicals exposure

6. Manage a medical emergency at the workplace

7. Identify common workplace accidents requiring first aid treatment

"Where more than 25 persons are employed in a workplace, there shall be appointed in the workplace as first-aiders who shall be readily available during working hours such number of persons as complies with the ratio of one first-aider for every 100 persons employed in the workplace or part thereof." - WORKPLACE SAFETY AND HEALTH ACT

Workplace Safety and Health (First Aid) Regulations stipulates that “every person appointed as a first-aider shall

(a) have successfully completed a training course acceptable to the Commissioner; and

(b) undergo such subsequent retraining in first-aid treatment as the Commissioner may require”.

Module 1: Principles and practices of first aid

- Definition, Aims, Roles/Limitations of a First Aider, Universal Precautions, First Aid Kit Contents and Maintenance

Module 2: Management of medical emergencies

- Primary Survey (DRSABC), Secondary Survey (SAMPLE) & Recovery Position, Monitoring the Casualty (AVPU), Records & Reporting System

Module 3: Wounds, bleeding and shock

- Bleeding, Shock, Types of Wounds, Management of bites and stings, Allergic Reaction, Principles and Techniques in Applying Bandages for Bleeding Wounds

Module 4: Fractures and soft tissues injuries

- Types of Fractures, Sprains, Strains, Dislocations, Management of Fractures and Soft Tissues Injuries, Practical Immobilisation and Bandaging for Fractures and Dislocations

Module 5: Handling and transportation of the injured

- 1-man & 2-men Casualty Transportation Techniques, Improvised methods

Module 6: Eye and other injuries

- Eye Injuries, Practical bandaging for eye injuries

Module 7: Burn injuries

- Burns Depth and Severity of Burns, Classification and Treatment of Burns

Module 8: Breathing difficulties

- Adult Foreign Body Airway Obstruction (Conscious Choking), Asthma, Hyperventilation, Fumes Inhalation, Near-Drowning

Module 9: The unconscious casualty

- Head/Spinal injuries, Heat disorders (Heat cramps, Heat exhaustion, Heat stroke), Fits, Fainting, Low Blood Sugar (Diabetic emergencies), Stroke

Module 10: First Aid Requirements in Factories and Other Workplace

- The Workplace Safety & Health (First Aid) Regulations

Module 11: Industrial Toxicology

- Chemicals, Safety Data Sheet, Preventive and Precautionary measures with Case Studies

Module 12: Safety and Accident Prevention

- Workplace Safety & Health Act Safe Work Measures with Case Studies

Module 13: CPR & use of AED

- Theory of CPR+AED, Chain of survival, Practical Performance of CPR+AED

Lecture - 1 Facilitator : 18 Learners

Practical - 1 Facilitator : 6 Learners (up to 3 Facilitators per class)

P1. Learners are required to submit their passport-sized photo (.jpeg) in digital format upon receiving the confirmation e-mail.

P2. As regulated by Workplace Safety and Health Council, Ministry Of Manpower, companies enrolling employees for Occupational First Aid Course must attained at least secondary two education or level 5 of ESS Workplace Literacy and Numeracy.

P3. Must be physically fit and able to render help to another individual during an emergency.

P4. Medically fit with no pre-existing medical conditions such as knee, spinal or joints injury. Learners with medical problems, such as bronchial asthma, any upper respiratory tract infection, orthopedic problems (e.g. slipped disc), are encouraged to consult their own doctors before attending the course. In case of doubt, please consult your doctor first and produce a Letter/Memo to indicate if fit for training.

P5. Pregnant ladies are discouraged from undertaking the CPR practice due to safety reasons. In case of doubt, please consult your doctor first and produce a Letter/Memo to indicate if fit for training. You are advised to defer taking the course to at least 6 weeks after delivery.

A1. Learners would need to fulfil 100% course attendance in order to be eligible for the assessments.

A2. Assessment Outline:

(i) Written Assessment (Up to 2 attempts to pass)

- 40 Multiple Choice Questions (70% to pass, 14/20 for Paper 1, 80% to pass, 16/20 for Paper 2)

(ii) Practical Assessment (Up to 3 attempts to pass)

- Wound Bandaging (Region: Head, Torso, Limb)

- CPR+AED

(iii) Oral Assessment (Up to 2 attempts to pass)

C1. This course is accredited by the Ministry of Manpower in compliance with ISO29990:2010 for Learning Service Providers.

C3. A credit card-sized certificate with 2 years validity will be issued upon successful completion by attaining Competent.
